New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision promptly following his triumph in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, the community will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
