Van de Ven Brace Ends Everton's Unbeaten Streak at Brand New Stadium

The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
