Britain's top artificial intelligence institute has unveiled a new mission to help protect the nation from online assaults targeting critical infrastructure including power, transportation and public services.
The Alan Turing Institute will implement a scientific research initiative specifically created to defend the nation from adversarial risks, according to a recent announcement.
This new direction follows organizational reforms at the publicly-funded organization, including the resignation of its ex-leader last month after both workforce dissatisfaction and government pressure for strategic overhaul.
The fresh initiative comes amid growing concern about the nation's susceptibility to online disruptions and online threats.
Recent incidents have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a significant disruption affecting worldwide digital services and fresh digital assaults that halted manufacturing at significant plants and logistics systems across several organizations.
A former commander of the Britain's aerial defense command will report back next month on how the state-backed organization can most effectively assist the extent of national AI objectives in national security, homeland protection and information gathering.
The center's head, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that multiple research initiatives at the 440-staff institute have been terminated, transferred out or finished because they aren't consistent with the fresh focus.
The institute has faced organizational challenges since last year as employees objected against changes, culminating in a group of employees submitting a formal grievance to the appropriate oversight organization.
The organization's management stated that these whistleblower claims were independently investigated by a external organization that found them to have no substance.
The organization will also focus on deploying AI for climate-related uses and healthcare advancements.
Researchers will develop ways to use the quickly-evolving systems to more rapidly and accurately forecast changes in climate conditions, marine environments and arctic coverage, partly to better inform official disaster response teams.
The organization will also target significant carbon footprint lowering in transportation networks, production methods and vital networks.
In the health sector, the emphasis will be on creating digital twins of heart systems, representing a frontline of personalized AI-enabled medicine that could enhance treatment approaches and patient outcomes for critically ill cardiac patients.
