The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Authorities Continue Manhunt for Killer.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant continued following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also shared words of sorrow online, stating: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, his family confirmed.

The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

What Happened

Nine more persons were hurt in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our city”.

The shooter opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that searched the hotel found two firearms and magazines when the individual was arrested, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
