A charity drive is aiming to propel a Palestinian lullaby to the top of the UK charts. The project hopes to send support to communities in Gaza while also showcasing Palestinian artistic heritage.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who features on the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a moment to stand with Palestinians during the holidays. He noted the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“That would be amazing if that came to pass, yes,” he said. “I’m not gonna be completely disappointed if it doesn't manage to, festive releases are a unique phenomenon.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the reimagining of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's powerful central theme.
“It has a profound significance for a lot of people,” Barghouti shared. “It’s basically saying that I would choose to perish with honor than live a life without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we want to live a respectful existence that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The track was produced in the wake of a large-scale benefit event held in the autumn. First conceived to be captured during the live event, the piece was cut from the show due to the event running long.
The impressive roster of musicians appearing on Lullaby includes a selection of well-known figures from the music world. All participated in the earlier concert, which successfully generated a significant sum for charitable causes.
Lullaby was brought to life by a group of music creators. The track features a fusion of the original Arabic with freshly written English words.
The organizers behind the initiative have stated that their aim is to raise as much as possible for a charitable pot. These proceeds will be channeled to Palestinian causes through an non-profit partner.
“We don’t have a rigid aim,” a representative said. “We aim for the maximum achievable. Of course, the greater the amount, the better. Every penny goes out to the people of Gaza.”
The situation in the territory was characterized as its extreme devastation, with a huge proportion of infrastructure said to be destroyed or damaged.
“Given that reality, a handful of millions won't make that much difference. But I think what truly matters is above all making this cause better known and demonstrating the human dimension of the story.”
The song is launching this Friday. Additionally, a video of the benefit event will be made available for streaming on a popular streaming site from mid-December.
