While perhaps not at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
