The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to personally create this new product within a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
The recent development escalates the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
The founder revealed that he plans to create other ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
