Among every adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me as much as the fear-filled conclusion of the viscerally violent and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spain-based writer-director created a dark, bleak and often savage world that included a few small , desolate hints of hope.
While Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from an impulse to advance the medium further, the filmmaker stated that it was rather an effort to express a global, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of every conflict.”
This theme is communicated through a group of colorful pastel bears , openly based on a famous line of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a community centered on militarism as well as the defense industry, many of the bears are fixated on slaughtering unicorns, because of a religious scripture that tells them they used to be masters of the forest, before these creatures forced them out.
Others haven’t fully fallen for the brainwashing, , choose to sample substances or engage sexually outdoors.
Unlike their gentle counterparts, these vivid animals show sexual organs , definite sex drives.
For one notably brutal, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the battle against unicorns turns into a road to control — and particularly to authority above his more tender, nicer brother the character Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , an apparent antisocial figure , and as horror takes over his unit and takes his teammates sequentially, he takes more and more control on his own behalf, via progressively violent, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are experiencing their own terror, in the form of an expanding, deadly beast in their woods.
“Initially, it appears as a humorous movie,” the filmmaker commented. “But then it turns into a more intense and sorrowful movie. And ultimately, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the more quirky films by a renowned filmmaker, that discover a mischievous joy in allowing cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Afterward it turns into something more like a darker film by that same artist, with increasingly visual gore and a noticeable connection to genuine suffering of war.
Ultimately, it becomes a full-on extreme drama bloodbath.
The terror which makes this a Halloween-friendly watch kicks in much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore fans of gore, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to watch a film they’ve never viewed until now, and who can handle a story that pulls no restraint.
See it in a dimly lit space without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
