The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
