The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
