The Oscars ceremony are set to start streaming exclusively on YouTube in the year 2029, representing the most recent significant shift in the film industry.

The organization behind the Oscars revealed the news on this week, indicating that it finalized a long-term agreement awarding YouTube the sole worldwide broadcasting rights to the Oscars until 2033.

The Oscars, set for March 15th, has been televised for a half a century on the traditional network. Commencing in 2029, the ceremony will be accessible live and for free on YouTube.

This is one more major shakeup in the entertainment world, which is navigating corporate acquisitions and consolidations, along with drastic reductions in filming.

"The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will permit us to broaden reach to the mission of the Academy to the biggest global viewership attainable - which will be positive for our film artists and the film community," stated Academy leadership in a announcement.

Over decades, audience numbers of the televised event have declined, though there was a small rise in 2025, with a considerable amount of younger viewers streaming from smartphones and computers.

In a corresponding announcement, YouTube's CEO called the Oscars "a key essential cultural touchstones" and noted that working with the Academy would "motivate a new generation of innovation and film lovers while remaining faithful to the Oscars' celebrated heritage".

ABC, which has televised the awards since the mid-1970s, stated that it was eagerly anticipating "to the upcoming broadcasts" it will continue to air.

This shift coincides with film industry giants face intricate takeover attempts. Such proposals were considered concerning for an business that has witnessed significant downsizing over the past several years.

Similar to major studios, cable networks have struggled as the viewers has chosen streaming services as an alternative.

YouTube winning rights to the Academy Awards clearly signals that reliance on digital platforms will continue to grow.
