Sovereign to Broadcast Intimate Address on His Health Battle in Television Programme

King Charles has taped a first-hand account about his journey with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer initiative, spearheaded by a leading cancer charity and Channel 4.

Official sources confirmed the King would reflect on his "recovery journey" as a individual battling cancer, in a televised statement on Friday at 8pm UK time.

The message, taped inside a royal residence recently, will stress the critical nature of routine screenings to help guarantee more people diagnose the disease at an initial point.

This represents a rare update on the health of the Sovereign, who has been undergoing regular treatment since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. However, it is believed unlikely the King will specify his type of cancer.

The Campaign's Central Purpose

The Stand Up To Cancer initiative each year raises funds for clinical trials and therapies and encourages people to get screenings to increase the odds of an timely detection.

The King's public discussion about his health challenge, and managing the disease, has been intended to raise awareness and to get more people to get checked - and this will be taken a step further with this unusual personal contribution.

Up until now the King's primary strategy to his cancer has been to keep working, maintaining a hectic timetable alongside his frequent sessions of therapy, and he appears not to have wanted to be defined by his diagnosis.

This year has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, taking several overseas trips, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and receiving the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for almost 40 years, which included the German president in recent days.

Friday's Broadcast Event

Friday evening's awareness programme on the network, presented by celebrities like Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will appeal to people not to be scared of getting preventative tests.

The hosts have been had experience with cancer - one host disclosed last month she had undergone surgery for the disease, while Balding was treated for thyroid cancer in the past. Presenter Adam Hills has previously mentioned his late father, who had stomach cancer and then later leukaemia.

The programme will reach out to the approximate nine million people in the UK who charities estimate are not compliant with public health checks, with an online checker to let people see if they are qualified for tests for several common cancers.

In an attempt to clarify screenings and show the value of early diagnosis there will be a real-time transmission from treatment centres at medical facilities in Cambridge.

"I want to remove the anxiety surrounding preventative tests and prove the public that they are not on their own in this," commented a presenter.

Available National Services

At present in the UK, there are three publicly available checks - for specific cancers - offered to certain age groups.

A emerging preventative initiative is also being slowly rolled out for people at high risk of contracting the disease, focusing on people in a specific age bracket, who are smokers or used to.

Men may request prostate cancer checks, but there is no national programme in place.

Charitable Impact

The charity project, which has raised a significant sum over the past decade, is funding dozens of research studies involving thousands of patients.

King Charles, in a address for dignitaries at a reception for cancer charities in the spring, had discussed recognising the "overwhelming and at times alarming experience" for those diagnosed and their families.

But he noted his experience of coping with cancer had demonstrated that "the most difficult times of illness can be alleviated by the greatest compassion," as he commended those who cared for individuals with the illness.

Royal representatives has not revealed the nature of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has undergone. The King's cancer was identified subsequent to he had had a routine operation.
