Doctors in the UK are preparing to stage a five consecutive day walkout next month, due to disputes regarding pay and employment.
The British Medical Association (BMA) announced that junior physicians will strike for five consecutive days from 7am on 14 November to 7am on 19 November.
Resident doctors, who make up about half of all medical staff in the National Health Service, are proceeding with the strike after failed negotiations with the health department.
The chair of the BMA’s resident doctors committee commented, “This is not where we wanted to be. We have spent the last week in talks with government, urging the health minister to resolve the crisis of unemployed physicians.”
“We know from our own survey 50% of second-year physicians in the UK are facing unemployment, their talents being unused whilst countless individuals endure long waits for care and hospital shifts remain vacant. This is a situation which cannot go on.”
He continued, “We talked with the government in good faith, hoping the minister to see that a agreement including options to slowly restore the pay reductions over several years, giving recent graduates a pay increase of just a pound an hour for the next four years.”
“We hoped the authorities would recognize that our demands are not just fair but are in the interest of the public and our those we treat and would also help prevent our physicians departing from the health service.”
Resident doctors have anywhere up to eight years’ experience practicing in hospitals, based on their field, or up to three years in general practice.
