Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Announced

There are "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday the US president said he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting over the phone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had urged him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on this week the American president endorsed a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the conflict on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he remarked.

Moscow has frequently resisted against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov said on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the war required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently preceded rumors that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
