'Serious blow' for the touring side as Atkinson leaves the field with a hamstring injury.
Gus Atkinson increased England's injury problems upon exiting the ground early on day two of the fourth Ashes Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson pulled up with his hamstring immediately following a delivery in his spell on Saturday.
The touring camp reported Atkinson reported "discomfort" and was to take time away from the action in order to be assessed "in the coming hours".
The concluding match of the series at the SCG starts this coming Sunday.
England have been without fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and Jofra Archer to a side strain on the current trip.
Matthew Fisher was added to the party as cover for Wood.
His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, taking just a handful of scalps.
He was dropped for the Adelaide match, then recalled for the fourth Test in the playing XI.
The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, and scoring 28 runs as a batsman being one of only three teammates to reach double figures.
After bowling one over late on the first day, he resumed for the second day's play and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper.
Unfortunately, at the end of his spell, he sent down a variation to the batsman and promptly felt at his leg.
Gus Atkinson returned to the side for the Melbourne match after being left out of the third.
