New Year's Celebrants Advised to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Throughout the UK

Weather experts are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be chilly, so additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this meant the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
