The Storm forward Eli Katoa has been officially ruled out the entire 2026 NRL season as he focuses on rehabilitation at home in his home state, after coming back from a prolonged stay in New Zealand after undergoing a neurosurgical procedure.
The 25-year-old athlete suffered three head impacts during a single match while playing for the Tongan national team in a international fixture against the Kiwis. This led to convulsions while on the sideline, necessitating emergency medical attention.
A surgical procedure to address a brain bleed resulted in the player hospitalized and temporarily grounded to his club base.
The club revealed recently that the forward has finally returned home and is recovering, having also been briefly admitted to a local medical facility.
āEliās health and wellbeing are our number one priority,ā stated the club's chief executive a team official. āIt is great to have him back home and under the care of our medical staff and local specialists.ā
Rodski noted that the athlete is improving each day and is eager to pursuing his recovery in a home environment.
However, the CEO confirmed that there is no timeframe for his return to health or a potential return to training.
āAfter discussions with our doctor and neuro specialists, Eli will not return to training this pre-season and wonāt be available for the upcoming season,ā Rodski declared. āThere is a lengthy recovery process in his recovery, and his primary goal will be on returning to full health before considering a potential comeback to rugby league activities.ā
Rodski finished by saying that Eli is a much loved and respected part of the squad and club, and that the entire club will support him fully and assist him during his recovery.
The National Rugby League is wrapping up its investigation into the circumstances that led to the required neurosurgery.
The powerful forward, who was selected for the league's best lineup at the annual awards ceremony, appeared to suffer a head injury during the pregame routine for the international contest.
However, he was allowed to play in the game and endured two more head impacts before being substituted in the second half.
His state worsened rapidly, and he required oxygen beside the field before being removed from the field on a stretcher.
The NRL has sought to tackle concerns around concussions in the sport in recent seasons, implementing stricter enforcement on dangerous contact and expanding the mandatory recovery time for affected players.
