The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advert made with Artificial Intelligence after facing significant public disapproval.

The short ad was developed via AI-generated video and was first uploaded publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, viewers on social media denounced the employment of AI in the advert. Many called it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment serves as an valuable lesson as we investigate the appropriate use of Artificial Intelligence," said a statement from the company.

The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of things that can go wrong during the festive season, under the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Adverts that include AI-created content have emerged as a rising phenomenon among large companies, especially for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently released consecutive AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Since segments created using current AI video tools are more likely to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also provoked worries about automation in the advertising sector, with some critics pointing out it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

After the video's removal, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

According to her, the development required "seven weeks" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then crafted during the edit "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an experiment," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the response for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive feedback" from the public.

However, several companies have also faced scrutiny for employing the technique in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the continuing conversation within the advertising and creative industries about the trade-off between new tools and creative integrity.
