It is deeply saddening’: the way 30 confined beluga whales are being used as bargaining chips in row over animal welfare.

Jelly Bean’s daughter Bertie is an cute little “ham sandwich”. Orion – nicknamed “Onion Ring” – is a large but very loyal companion. Another whale, Zephyr has “endless energy” and moves like a wiggly creature. Lillooet is the “most affectionate” with a heart of gold.

Thirty enclosed marine mammals in a Canadian entertainment facility have been entangled in a tussle between a defunct facility, government authorities and advocacy groups.

But those working directly with the whales say the impassioned controversy over their fate often overlooks the individual traits of the whales who, after spending their lives in enclosed habitats, have been carefully observed by the people who see them each day.

After the federal government prevented the transfer of the belugas to China, the struggling attraction near Niagara Falls where they are housed warned to euthanize them unless the federal government covers the cost of their survival. Canada’s marine resources official has denied that ultimatum, placing the thirty whales in an dangerously unstable circumstance.

Intelligent Sea Creatures

Researchers say that beluga whales’ neural makeup, along with their mimicry abilities, problem solving and group interactions point to they are remarkably smart mammals – something one caretaker learned directly.

Burgess spent several years as a marine mammal specialist, a job that entailed earning the trust of the marine predators.

“Developing those bonds over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of affection. At the outset, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain reciprocal understanding. And they start being more vulnerable with you. It’s just so wonderful and rewarding.”

Burgess knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was nonetheless surprised by the nuances and idiosyncrasies in their characters. She formed a particular love for two female belugas with contrasting natures.

“One whale selected me. Cleo demanded work,” she said. “Both changed the way I understand connection.”

Public Concerns and Deteriorating Conditions

Burgess’s relationship with the whales developed against a background of growing public opposition to their enclosure.

During her time at the park, seven belugas and the park’s single orca, Kiska, succumbed. In total, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a number which the facility links to natural mortality, but which advocates say points to the substandard environment in which they were kept.

The facility did not admit visitors to the visitors over the summer, but the former trainer says she observed directly results of the shutdown. “Concrete is breaking off from the tanks because they’re falling apart and not being maintained. The whales are inquisitive and so they take pieces and move about with chunks in their jaws. It’s upsetting to see.”

The park did not comment to a inquiry, but in the past claimed: “The whales … obtain far better health care and 24/7 attention than any individual in the Britain, or elsewhere.”

Fate in Limbo and Potential Resolutions

The former employee was terminated from the park in recent months following the passing of Eos, an sick beluga the caretakers had to put down. She said the facility believed particulars of the incident were disclosed to the media and she was fired not long after.

The ambiguity over the whales’ outcome has left her and staff members in distress. She says the facility’s threat to end the lives of its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “logistically impossible” undertaking, adding any attempts to put down even a single beluga would require “immense personnel”, equipment and specialized tools.

“It cannot happen in hell the employees would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess supports demands for the whales to be transferred right away from the facility, with its crumbling tanks and reduced personnel.

In late September, Canada’s government official rejected a bid to export the whales to an overseas location.

“Granting the request would have meant a ongoing situation in confinement and a reversion to public entertainment,” the official wrote. “As Canadians, we know that whales should be in the wild, not in enclosures for our entertainment. I could not in clear conscience permit an relocation that would continue the conditions these belugas have endured.”

But Burgess said the official’s comments reflect a more general incorrect perception of the circumstances of existence for belugas living their whole lives in enclosures.

“The society needs to grasp these are whales that have existed solely in enclosed habitats and they will need constant supervision for the rest of their years,” she said. “Many just don’t comprehend that it’s not as easy as saying ‘shut it down’.”

Alternative Habitat and Ongoing Debate

As decision makers struggle to find a resolution, suggestions have surfaced, some of which have minimal feasibility. One proposal called for the belugas to be released into the wilds of the Arctic – where whales are a important part of sustenance for local populations.

A proposed sanctuary in the province of eastern Canada, which has received regulatory clearance, has proven most controversial. The prospective facility, which includes extensive space of protected cove, is not yet built. Supporters remain hopeful that it could ultimately represent a long term answer for a number of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among caretakers she’s discussed with, there is “skepticism there” about what she said is “simply an trial” in the whales’ well-being.
