The current period signifies a full decade since the word “vanishing” hit the common lexicon. Initially, the concept that someone could abruptly cease all contact with a romantic interest without any notice seemed like the pinnacle of indignity. Our innocence was charming. In the 10 years since, navigating toward a partner has only become more perplexing – an oftentimes fruitless endeavor in awkwardness that is increasingly pigeonholed by social media slang.
Generation Z, a generation who came of age during a loneliness epidemic, a masculinity crisis, and a coordinated challenge on the freedoms of women and the queer community, faces a significantly more chaotic environment than their Gen Y predecessors could ever imagine. And so their romantic glossary has grown more elaborate and more deranged, with phrases like “Shrekking” and “vine swinging” straining the boundaries of your sanity.
The following list is a detailed guide to the words gen Z is using to talk about love, intimacy and the search of both. To paraphrase one of the year’s most enduring memes, by the end of this list you’ll yearn to get back to a bygone era – because wherever that is, it is free from “ideological catfishing”.
Realness – For Zoomers, romance's ultimate goal is showing up as your real, unfiltered self. You'll need it with that!
Avian theory – A TikTok trend connected to a test developed by couples researchers, in which you mention something trivial – for example, “I saw a bird today” – and note whether your partner’s response is engaged or dismissive. If they do not want to hear more about the bird, you two are headed for splitsville.
Mysterious girlfriend – Zoomers' answer to the “manic pixie dream girl” stereotype of the early 2000s – but instead of having short fringe, liking indie music and eschewing commitment, the black cat girlfriend focuses on her own needs while exuding mystery and independence. (She may yet have that fringe.)
Support test – This means seeking out someone who aids you unprompted. If you entered a room, they would get a chair for you to take a load off.
Choremance – A date where two people form a link while running errands, such as pet care or grocery shopping. In other words, how broke young adults do affordable romance in a post-“$5 beer and shot combo” world.
Crashing out – Losing it when you feel swamped by life. You can lose it over a infatuation or breakup, venting all of your unreciprocated emotions.
DINK – Double income, no kids. Once a marker of 1980s young urban professional affluence, it describes couples who forgo parenthood to focus on their own fulfillment. Or because they find it financially impossible to become parents.
Open communication – The opposite of playing it cool: utilizing communication, transparency and openness.
Indicators
Niche bonding – When you find someone who’s just as passionate about documentaries about the second world war or physical media hoarding or art or anything it may be, as you. Or, conversely, meeting someone who loathes the same things or people that you do (nothing fosters closeness faster than having a common enemy).
The band Geese – A band many young men is into.
Phantom reappearing – Someone who resurfaces into your life after a period of silence.
Eager-to-please partner – Someone who is affable, eager to please and loyal. The uncommon partner who is adored by all of his significant other's friends, and a mysterious partner's foil.
Gooners – A mostly online community of men so obsessed with masturbation that they attempt extended sessions, purposefully delaying climax so they can continue as long as possible.
Gloomy heterosexuality – A mindset describing many women’s increasing pessimism toward straight relationships. It will come as no surprise to anyone who read the above entry.
High-value woman – An archetype promoted by manosphere figures: a woman who is attractive, ever-comforting and happily domestic, who seemingly has no goals of her own other than pleasing her man partner. Perhaps now you’re beginning to grasp the whole “heterofatalism” thing better?
Ick factors – Arbitrary and frequently trivial turnoffs that instantly extinguish any sense of interest.
“He would if he cared" – Something to keep in mind after you watch someone else receive an extremely sweet display.
Jobs – These have not been this crucial in the romance landscape since the greed-is-good era. For some women, a “finance bro” is the ideal catch: a fleece-vest-wearing, Republican-coded guy who will provide (there’s a popular TikTok audio on the topic). Meanwhile the anti-capitalist crowd opt for partners in fields they see as being staffed by the more nurturing among us: nurses, educators or counselors.
Making out – This year, scientists learned that the kiss has existed for 16 million years. But the era of kissing may be waning since some gen Z want fewer intimate scenes in film, as they are having less sex themselves and do not find onscreen intimacy realistic.
Enhanced profile crafting – Catfishing-lite. Or, not exactly being dishonest about who you are, but maybe using older (better) pictures of yourself on a dating app profile, or making your career sound more impressive than it is. Also known as {
