Harsh Winter Weather Systems Take 5 Victims in the Gaza Strip Amidst Desperate Living Situations in Temporary Camps.

Powerful winter gusts brought walls down onto flimsy tents sheltering people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 people. These deaths highlights the dangerous living conditions that continue after more than two years of devastating airstrikes and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers No Relief from Harsh Elements

Although a truce has been in effect from last fall, aid groups report that residents broadly lack the adequate housing required to withstand frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, said on Tuesday that the dead include two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," said a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot high wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least five others were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the rubble that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothes as well as food and hygiene supplies across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians reside in makeshift tents because their homes were turned into rubble during the hostilities. Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Figures Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the Hamas-run government, reports over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the ceasefire began. The authority maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least 100 minors below eighteen years old – 60 boys and forty girls – had been killed since the ceasefire began due to armed actions, including drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of bullets. These numbers, he said, represented cases where sufficient information had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now calls calm would be considered a crisis anywhere else," he concluded.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than two million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly needed during the winter months. It’s the third winter since the conflict involving Israel and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.
