The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.
It has been established that three different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.
