"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The sender also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile fans have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to start a band."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will always be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
