The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
