The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor commented when asked about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any choice is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the former president's team, using his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to pull government money from the state and warned eliminating the power to issue trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from the state," Duffy stated, following a this week's deadly accident in California involving an non-citizen trucker that caused loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.
Duffy had previously stated he was blocking $40m from California for ignoring linguistic standards for CDL holders.
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand federal law," his administration responded in a previous statement responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
A recent study found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of a third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.
In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The idea that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
