Bolsonaro detained after being considered a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
