A decade ago, Barry was playing in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a name for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held international positions across multiple countries. He has worked with stars like top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”
Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. The approach include psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”
The assistant coach says and the head coach as highly ambitious. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he declares. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that’s what we spend long hours toward. It’s our job to not only anticipate with developments but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to know-how to performance.
“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”
He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.
“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”
Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried regarding the final talk, especially as his class contained luminaries including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.
The next manager with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
