According to a senior military official, the US armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
The administration has encountered growing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
