A Special Release Pokémon Card Aims to Be Super Effective Against Speculators

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership has been formed. Pokémon's creators and London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring special merchandise. Enthusiasts can look forward to offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's theme. The big draw, though, will be a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. The store is scheduled both the physical location to online from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited tome filled with beautiful artwork depicting creatures in their wild environments. The concept is the kind of research a Pokémon Professor might publish after adventurers provide field notes, or a naturalist's journal could have sketched if the Galapagos teemed with flying-types rather than birds. A key appeal stems from the book's scholarly treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Stand Out

It is common for The Pokémon Company to release promos celebrating big events and crossover partnerships. Many such collector items typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. What distinguishes this latest promotion apart is its unusually large dimensions. While precise specs were not immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be highly restricted, with customers limited to only a single card per purchase.

Curbing Speculator Interest

Per an official announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available beyond the museum walls. But, broader availability will only be specific stores in the United Kingdom. Critically, fans cannot purchase this promo through the online Pokémon Center. Although speculator demand is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're feeling left out, there is the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit coming to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny of sales from the museum store and its web shop, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to conducting studies and finding solutions to the global ecological crisis," it says.
