A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on recently seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
