2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the necessity for a more defined direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
The news mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete content from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to heart and revamped the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our players.
The belief in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
His management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to continue observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
David
Brinkman presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that shift every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but fans can look forward to further news as development continues.
